HIGHLAND BOOKS has been owned by Tim and Peggy Hansen for 35 years. It’s one of the oldest independent businesses in Brevard, as well as one of the longest-surviving independent bookstores in the country.  Highland Books has always been in the same location on North Broad Street, but has expanded its space and offerings over the years.

Three generations of the Hansen’s family have worked in the bookstore and three generations of customers have shopped there.  Peggy’s mother, Frances Pledger, worked with them for 20 years, and both of their daughters, Lena and Megan, worked there off and on through school, college, and beyond.  Ruth Hall and Cindi Cheek have each put in 25 years, and Jennifer LaForenza has been with the store for five years.  What an experienced and dedicated staff!

Highland Books has always been known for its carefully chosen selection of books for adults and children, and is also well-known for its huge greeting card department.  More recently, Fair Trade crafts have been introduced and the bookstore now contains a Ten Thousand Villages mini-store.

The store has hosted hundreds of authors and literary programs during its 35 years in Brevard.  Robert Morgan, Ann B. Ross, and Lillian Jackson Braun have made appearances, and there have been programs on wildflowers, hiking, cooking, and several Harry Potter parties!

Tim and Peggy’s interest in the mountains, hiking and exploring WNC, wildflowers, and local history, are evident in their extensive collection of regional books and maps. The bookstore was opened in 1975 by Bill and Jeanette Rowan, who by a fortuitous bit of luck decided to retire early and sell the store to the Hansens.  Tim and Peggy consider that a lucky day, bringing them to Brevard and Highland Books.
