                                   King of the Moonshiners
                  Bruce Stewart, Appalachian State University

Stewart presents local moonshiner, Lewis Remond in fact and fiction.  On March 1, 1876 Redmond killed US Deputy Marshall, Alfred Duckworth. Redmond escaped into Pickens County, SC. The Charleston News & Courier printed a lengthy interview with Redmond, portraying him in a sympathetic light.  His life grew into legend that was sensationalized in a dime novel.  Redmond also wrote his own biography.
All viewpoints and versions of Redmond's story will be presented.

This long-running monthly program series features a wide variety of speakers, performers and artists on an array of topics. During the Sesquicentennial year, each program in the series will focus on some aspect of the arts, history or culture of Transylvania County. Contact the Library for individual program listings. All programs are held in the Rogow Room of the Transylvania County Library, 212 South Gaston Street, Brevard.
