Sons of Mercy and Justice: A Transylvania Story
Keith Parker & Leslie Parker Borhaug
This presentation on a segment of local Transylvania history will focus on events leading up to, during, and after the Civil War and Reconstruction. If focuses on the lives of two local men, father and son, and their families: James "Craf" McGaha, hospitality giant for man and beast alike and for whom the historic McGaha Chapel is named, and V. B. McGaha, three-term Transylvania Sheriff and Federal Internal Revenue Agent for WNC, upper S. C. and surrounding areas. V. B.'s diaries, IRS reports, church records, Craf's Civil Ware records and letters, pictures and other documents kept by the family provided background for Parker & Borhaug's historical novel.  A paralled modern fictional story introduces readers to the modern day setting in Transylvania and to characters who relate to themes and figures in the historical part.

This long-running monthly program series features a wide variety of speakers, performers and artists on an array of topics. During the Sesquicentennial year, each program in the series will focus on some aspect of the arts, history or culture of Transylvania County. Contact the Library for individual program listings. All programs are held in the Rogow Room of the Transylvania County Library, 212 South Gaston Street, Brevard.
