Return of the Chestnut

Transylvania County, NC was formed May 20, 1861. We have been celebrating our 150th anniversary all year long with events in different communities throughout the county.

The American chestnut tree has been an important part of our county's history and in earlier times, had great impact on the economy of the area. The Transylvania County Historical Society will host an event Thursday, October 13, 2011 at 10am as part of our history and heritage celebration. We will be partnering with The American Chestnut Foundation to plan three restoration American Chestnut seedlings on the historical Allison-Deaver House grounds. These seedlings are 15/16 American Chestnut and represent  nearly thirty years of research. They are the most blight resistant seedlings available at this time.

Come join us for this history-making event!
