The Town of Brevard was created on paper in February of 1861 but was not incorporated until July of 1868. The Bill to Incorporate the Town was read in the House of Representatives the first time Saturday, July 11th, second time Monday, July 13th, and the third and final time on Saturday, July 18th where it was passed by the following vote: Yeas.....31; Nays.....0.

By 1968 the people of Transylvania had endured many hardships. The founding of the county had coincided with one of the most difficult times in American history: the Civil War. With all county resources committed to basic survival, it was seven years before the town was officially incorporated as a county seat.

Since those early days, the town has seen many changes. It has experienced economic booms and depressions, times of war and times of peace. The remarkable thing about the town and its people is its ability to change and adapt to the times.

Here, like everywhere else, social and economic changes are reflected in the styles of the day. Fashion isn't just the clothes people wear each day. It is a continually evolving entity that connects people across the street, the country and even across the world. Some strive to be in vogue and others could care less, yet fashion has a place in society that has been constant throughout the ages.

The work and play, cultural and moral values, home life and politics of a society all contribute to the lifestyle trends which influence the clothes people wear. Many circumstances over the years have posed challenges to the fashion world, but designers, like Transylvanians, have always found a way to overcome. They have delivered styles that reflect a specific time in history, making the fashion of each era unique.

The Museum has a variety of clothing items on display through May 12. Visit to see the displays and learn how fashion has changed over the past 150 years.

Fashion is always of the time in which you live.” ~Coco Chanel
